What Internet Speed Do You Need for 4K IPTV?

IPTV streams over your normal internet connection, so the quality you can watch depends on your speed. Here are the numbers we use and how to check yours.
The short answer
- HD: about 10 Mbps
- 4K: about 25 Mbps
The player app steps down to Full HD or HD on its own if your line slows, so it keeps playing instead of freezing.
Speed is per screen
If two TVs watch at once, add the numbers together. Two 4K streams need around 50 Mbps. Phones, laptops and downloads in the house use the same line.
How to test
- Connect the device you watch on to the same Wi-Fi as the TV.
- Open a speed-test website or app and run it twice.
- Look at the download number, not the upload.
Wi-Fi or cable?
Your plan may say 100 Mbps, but Wi-Fi in another room can drop to a tenth of that. A cable to the TV box removes the guesswork. If you must use Wi-Fi, choose the 5 GHz band.
What to do if you are below the numbers
Watch in HD instead of 4K, lower the other traffic in the house, or ask your internet provider about a faster plan. See the buffering fixes for more.
Questions people ask
Can I watch 4K on 15 Mbps?
It may play, but with little room to spare. About 25 Mbps is a safer target for a smooth 4K picture.
Does IPTV use a lot of data?
Yes. HD uses roughly several gigabytes per hour and 4K uses more. If your provider caps your data, check your allowance.
Does the same speed apply on a phone?
Yes, and mobile data adds the same data use, so Wi-Fi is better for long viewing.
